I know how overwhelming creating a baby registry can be😱
After having two babies, I've learned that you really don't need as much as you might think. That's why I want to share the baby essentials I actually used and loved, along with the products you can totally skip (hint = wipe warmer).
I originally created this as an under $1,000 baby challenge. While prices have changed over the years, the goal of this guide is still the same: helping you build a practical registry without buying a bunch of stuff you don't actually need.

Diapering
✅ Huggies Little Snugglers - Size 1
Huggies Little Snugglers are my diaper of choice for absorbency! These were also the diapers that our hospital used. They let us take home a couple of newborn packs & then we needed Size 1 diapers (8-14 lbs) for our 8lb baby when she was 2 weeks old.

Mom Tip💗
Babies can go through up to 10 diapers/day which makes the cost add up quickly! We chose to use store brand diapers like Walmart’s Parent’s Choice for daytime & Huggies for nighttime (= better absorbency) to help save money!

✅ Wipes
Huggies Natural Care (sensitive/fragrance free) wipes are the BEST! They are gentle on baby’s skin, have a soft texture that cleans up poo easily, & the packaging ensures only one wipe comes out at a time = total parent win. Because there is nothing worse than struggling with your wipes when you are cleaning up a diaper blowout #IYKYK

I thought you needed this elaborate changing table/station to change baby’s diapers, but you don’t! You can really change baby’s diaper anywhere (couch, bed, floor, etc.) However, it’s helpful to have a wipeable changing pad - compared to those with cloth covers - because they are super easy to wipe clean & keep sanitary! We kept our changing pad on top of Gianna’s dresser with diapers & wipes in one of the drawers.

🤔 Diaper Pail *optional
We did not use our diaper pail all that much, so I wouldn’t call it a baby essential. The refill bag cost can add up too. Instead, we ended up just putting our daughter’s pee diapers in the kitchen trash. For poo diapers, we would tie them up in a plastic grocery bag & toss them into the garage trash to keep the stink out of the house.
🤔 Wipe Warmer *optional
I didn’t even take our wipe warmer out of the box, so needless to say you can get by without one haha. I preferred taking wipes right out of the pack they came in!
Baby Feeding
These were my favorite baby bottles! I know it’s hard to know what bottles a baby will take until they get here, but these Philips Avent Natural bottles are a universal favorite for many babies/parents. I especially appreciated how easy they were to clean too!

It’s helpful to have baby formula on hand - just in case - because it’s hard to know what your feeding style will be (breastfed, pumped milk, formula, combo feeding) until you meet your baby. For example, my original plan was to breastfeed my daughter, but I couldn’t figure it out which caused a lot of stress for me as a new mom. Having a can of formula can help alleviate stress because at least you’ll know your baby won’t go hungry as you figure things out. Fed is best, mama!
✅ Breast Pump (covered by insurance)
Breast pumps are typically covered by insurance - woo hoo! I do like the convenience of a wearable breast pump too (like the one linked here). Overall, I would look for a breast pump that has a rechargeable battery option because it provides more flexibility of where you can pump without feeling like you’re attached to a wall because of the plug haha.

I would say this is a parent MUST HAVE! Whether your plan is to breastfeed or bottle feed, it’s very helpful to have a nursing/feeding pillow that gets baby into a comfortable & ergonomic position to feed. I also struggled with ‘mommy wrist’ from holding baby, so our feeding pillow helped to take the pressure off my wrists & provided comfort. We used this one EVERYDAY, MULTIPLES TIMES A DAY!
✅ Breast Milk Storage - bottles, bags
This is a great starter set for pumped milk! I ended up combo feeding with pumped milk/formula for the first 3 months until we switched fully to formula for my daughter. I liked how this set helped me to organize my milk in the fridge with the bottles, bags, & tray and I could organize the milk by day/time too!

These are a great & affordable burp cloth for spit up. A lot of parents love them & they come in a variety of pretty colors too!

It’s really helpful to have a bottle drying rack to keep bottles, nipples, pacifiers, & pump parts separate from everyday kitchen items! Also, a vertical baby bottle drying rack like this one is also a great way to save precious counter space - if that’s something that’s already limited like it was for us - compared to something like the BOON grass drying rack!

I would recommend a bottle brush with a suction cup bottom. It’s nice for the brush to have a designated spot on the counter & not constantly roll away/drop especially when you are a bit sleep deprived!

Pacifiers are hit & miss for babies and from a health standpoint! For example, we offered our newborn daughter a pacifier, but she stopped using one after turning 3 months old. Also, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) generally recommends waiting until you and your baby have a nursing routine down pat (~4 weeks) to avoid nipple confusion if you are breastfeeding. However, the APP also recommends that pacifiers can reduce the risk of SIDS with onset of sleep for newborns. So do your own research, talk to your pediatrician, & practice what makes sense for your family!

🤔 Bottle Soap *optional
They make soaps specifically for baby bottles/pump parts like Dapple, Babyganics, & Dreft! However, our pediatrician told us that Dawn can also be used which is what we ended up using because we already had it!
🤔 Bottle Sterilizer *optional
You can always just use boiling water to sterilize your baby bottles, nipples, pacifiers, pump parts, etc! However, this Philips Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer is a really helpful & convenient tool that sterilizes baby/pump items quickly in the microwave (in just 2 minutes!)
Mom Tip💗
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you should clean bottles, nipples and other feeding items after every use and sanitize them at least once daily if your baby is under 3 months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system because of an illness or medical treatment (ex: HIV, cancer, or chemotherapy for cancer). Honestly, I sanitized our baby items 1x/week which worked well for our family, but ask your pediatrician what will work best for your family’s unique situation!
Also, here is a helpful article that explains the cleaning/sterilizing process: https://www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/bottle-feeding/when-and-how-to-sterilize-baby-bottles
Baby Sleep
✅ Bassinet
We kept our daughter in our room in a simple bassinet until she was ~6 months old! In fact, it’s recommended that babies sleep in their parents room for the first 4-6 months (AAP)! The safest place for a baby to sleep is alone, on her back, & on a flat, empty surface (no blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, etc.) such as a bassinet that is placed bedside.

Mom Tip💗
It’s crazy how bassinets can range from $50 all the way up to $2,000 depending on the features offered! The main bassinet features I would recommend are 1) wheels: it’s helpful to move baby around while sleeping if needed and 2) storage: it’s helpful to have a storage area for all of baby’s essentials like diapers, wipes, burp cloths, extra clothes, & pacifiers for those night wakings!
Also, it’s helpful to know as a first time mom that some babies just sleep better than others depending on baby’s individual temperament & self-soothing abilities. We struggled with sleep with my daughter as a newborn & still do now into her toddler years. Every child is different & it’s ultimately our job as parents to not force our children to sleep, but to support our children into sleep.
It’s incredibly helpful to have an extra bassinet sheet on hand, so that you’re not needing to wait hours to wash/dry bedding to be used for baby’s next naptime/bedtime. Just make sure you get the right size/shape to match your bassinet’s mattress!

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the HALO sleep sacks & swaddles for baby’s first year! These are soo much easier to use & actually stay on compared to traditional muslin swaddle blankets that wrap your baby like a burrito. The newborn size also has velcro to keep baby’s arms tucked in or up by their face for self-soothing & a zipper for easy diaper changes too. They come in different fabrics too like cotton, fleece, & muslin. I preferred the cotton fabric the most. I recommend these to all first time parents!

Mom Tip💗
It’s helpful to have at least 2-3 sleep swaddles/sacks per size (one to wear, one to wash, & one to spare)! That’s kind of a theme I noticed for most of our sleep items like sleep sacks, bed sheets, and mattress covers. Because there’s nothing worse than having to clean up a diaper blow-out or vomit in the crib at 2AM!
This is my favorite sound machine! We use the ocean sound for my daughter. Also, I like that it can either be plugged in or battery operated to take around the house with you.

Some baby monitors can get really fancy, but we were just fine using a simple baby video monitor like this one. Your baby remains pretty close to you in the beginning - especially since it’s recommended that they sleep in the same room as you for the first 6 months! Honestly, I would rely more on my ears to hear baby...which supposedly worked back in the olden days too haha. Or getting a camera that connects to an app on your phone (like a ring camera) is helpful as well since we always have our phones on us anyways!

🤔 Travel Crib/Pack & Play *optional
You could also use a travel crib (also known as a pack & play/play yard/playpen) with a newborn bassinet level instead of a traditional bassinet for safe baby sleep! We kept a pack & play in our family room for daytime naps, but really could have just used our bassinet especially since we lived in a one-level ranch home at the time. In general, a pack & play is a helpful baby tool because they can be used longer than your typical bassinet (in terms of weight limits) and are portable crib option to take to grandma’s house or on vacation. However, I admit that they are a pain in the butt to break down & put back together haha!
Clothing
It's very easy to go overboard buying adorable newborn clothes, but trust me, you don't need nearly as many as you think! Newborns grow quickly, and I found that having a smaller wardrobe made life much easier for everyone.
The video below shows how many clothes we ACTUALLY used in a week for my daughter.
What I recommend is called the 7x2 Rule:
7 outfits for the week
2 outfits for spare/accidents
4-5 pairs of pajamas
Also, buying clothes in the same color palette (ex: pink, purple, white, gray or blue, green, white, tan) will allow you to create many cute outfits out of what you have!
This rule has been working super well for us - even into the toddler years👶➡️👧
My biggest advice? Start small! You can always purchase more clothes once you learn baby's habits (blow outs/spit up) & what styles you prefer the most.
Mom Tip💗
I would recommend to start with 0-3 month size clothing (9-12LBS) rather than newborn clothing (6-9LBS). The larger size might be big on baby for a couple of weeks, but you will get much more use out of them than newborn sizes. Babies grow pretty quickly!
✅ Bodysuits - Short Sleeve
A name for a bodysuit is also onesie, vest, diaper shirt, or snap suit. These are great everyday short sleeve bodysuits for baby in warmer months like spring/summer!

✅ Bodysuits - Long Sleeve
These are great everyday long sleeve bodysuits for baby on chilly days or in cooler months like fall/winter!

These are great everyday pants for baby in all seasons! Honestly, we didn’t use a lot of pants when my daughter was a newborn. We were mostly inside our house getting used to parenthood & doing soo many diaper changes. If we did go outside for a walk in the stroller, I’d tuck a baby blanket around her legs in the car seat.

Mom Tip💗
Keep a small wardrobe of coordinating basics. You'll spend less money, have less laundry to manage, and you can always add more later if needed!
I loved dressing Gianna in sleep n’ plays (or called footie pajamas)! I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS recommend zippers over snaps for easier diaper changes. We used them for daytime or nighttime & they just made new mom life simple! Highly recommend🙌

✅ Socks
Socks are a personal preference! The newborn days are usually spent inside where baby’s feet are typically kept covered in footie pajamas or a swaddle making socks unnecessary. However, socks can be helpful if you keep your home cooler (ex=under 68°F) or go outside on a colder day. We used 2 pairs of socks/week in the baby clothing video mentioned above!

There are soo many cute nursery hampers out there, but I would highly recommend a simple plastic hamper! We had mold & mildew issues with our baby laundry because the breastmilk/spit up couldn’t breathe inside our fabric hamper. So learn from my mistake here and save yourself the money & headache by getting a plastic hamper!

🤔 Hats/Mittens *optional
We did not end up using hats or mittens for our daughter! While she was born in spring/summer, I still don’t think that hats or mittens are necessary for newborns while indoors. Newer research shows that healthy newborns are able to regulate their temperature completely on their own in moderate climates. Also, regular nail trimmings can help prevent scratches too.
🤔 Baby Shoes *optional
Baby shoes are sooo freaking cute, but they certainly are not necessary for newborns! In fact, it’s even recommend that babies learn to stand and walk barefoot while indoors to encourage sensory input & proper foot development. But you have some time until this next stage, mama😉
Bathtime
I would recommend getting a newborn to toddler (3-in-1) bathtub! This type of bathtub worked great for our family especially since we only had a stand-up shower at the time. You can place it in your kitchen sink for newborn baths & then move it to the shower/bathtub to provide sitting support as your little one grows. Definitely the best bang for your buck!

I loved the Cetaphil Baby 2-in-1 baby wash for my daughter! It’s super gentle with a mild fragrance and at an affordable price point too. REMEMBER: a little goes a long way for sensitive baby skin!

MomTip💗
Did you know that you don’t need to bathe your newborn everyday? It’s recommended to bathe your newborn with soap 1-2x per week while keeping face, neck, & bum clean daily with wipes or water. The number of baths can increase in frequency as baby starts solids & becomes more mobile (~6 months). Otherwise, over-bathing your newborn & infant may dry out their fragile skin.
Baby sized towels & washcloths are much easier to use on your baby compared to regular, adult-sized towels! Babies are small & pretty slippery when wet, so it’s helpful to dry them off in a towel that doesn’t have extra fabric to promote a secure grip. Also, baby washcloths tend to be softer for newborn skin and other delicate areas like the umbilical cord & eyes.

🤔 Baby Lotion *optional
I personally use don’t use lotion after showering, so I did not use lotion on my daughter either. However, some babies might have drier skin, so I would recommend Cetaphil Baby lotion though since we liked their body wash so much!
🤔 Bath Toys + Accessories *optional
We didn’t start using bath toys until Gianna was around 6 months old! I’d mostly just talk or sing to her when giving her a bath as a newborn. I bathed her in the kitchen sink until around 6 months old, so we didn’t have much need for bath accessories either: kneeling pad, bath toy organizer, etc. A simple plastic cup is also perfect for rinsing baby’s body & hair!
Health & Safety
There are A LOT of baby wellness products out there - diaper rash cream, gripe water, cradle cap brushes, probiotic drops, & booger/fart suckers just to name a few!
However, not every baby will need all of these products because each baby is a unique individual with their own needs.
For instance, I registered for many different diaper rash creams thinking I would need them because “don’t all babies get diaper rashes”? However, my daughter didn’t get her first diaper rash until she was 13 months old & GUESS WHAT: the active ingredients in all of our diaper rash creams had expired by then!
The same goes for a cradle cap brush that we never used.
Therefore, I would recommend to start out simple with the health & safety items listed below & then add to your collection as needed per your pediatrician.
A simple baby grooming kit with a hair comb, nail clippers/nail file, & silicone toothbrush is all you really need for baby. We also brought home a nasal aspirator (aka booger sucker) from the hospital with us, but didn’t use it that often.

A forehead or ear thermometer can give you a really quick, easy, & accurate read of baby’s temperature compared to a traditional thermometer that goes up the bum. OUCH!

It’s helpful to have Infant Tylenol on hand just in case! Always call your pediatrician to see what’s best for your baby & for dosing guidelines, but having some Infant Tylenol ready to go can help prevent a late night trip to the store when baby already isn’t feeling well.

We thankfully did not deal with diaper rashes a whole lot, but I know every baby is different! If we did have some redness down there after some diarrhea or something, I liked the Aquaphor Baby healing ointment the most to help soothe & heal baby’s bottom or for any other kind of skin irritation.

Mom Tip💗
Newborn skin is very delicate! Overbathing a baby’s body with soap or overwiping a baby’s bum can actually strip their skin’s protective barrier causing a rash. I would definitely wipe my daughter’s bum clean after poo poo diapers, but I wouldn’t wipe my daughter’s bum after every pee pee diaper to avoid stripping her skin which helped to minimize rashes.
Transportation
First, what the heck even is a travel system? And how is it different from a regular stroller?! A travel system thankfully combines all the items you will need once your baby is born packaged conveniently together & often at a better price than buying each stroller item individually.
A travel system includes your infant car seat carrier, car seat base (that stays in your car for the infant car carrier), stroller frame, & a toddler chair. Some travel systems have a toddler chair that converts to a newborn bassinet while other travel systems have bassinet attachments sold separately. What your travel system WILL NOT include is a convertible car seat (...more on this later).

Mom Tip💗
It’s overwhelming how many stroller & car seat brands are out there😳
My biggest advice for new parents is to find a travel system that you feel most comfortable maneuvering & folding to get in/out of your car. Like buying a car, go to your local baby store to test drive different strollers because - hint, hint - an expensive stroller doesn’t always mean better!
An extra car seat base (or two) is extremely helpful to have when transporting baby! We kept a base in my car, my husband’s car, and even in my mom’s car too. While it’s possible to share a singular car seat base by uninstalling and reinstalling into a new car each time, I really enjoyed the convenience of multiple bases that allowed us to plop baby in any car & go. Just make sure you get the correct car seat base for your infant car seat carrier’s model!

You can really use any old bag/backpack to carry baby’s essentials with you!
However, this is the diaper bag I use & is the BEST I have found for what it offers (bottle insulation, many pockets for organization, stroller straps, & waterproof fabric) and for the price too. Overall, I would recommend a backpack over a tote bag though because it allows you to use your hands much more!

It’s important to protect baby’s skin & eyes from the sun especially when under 6 months old (AAP)! This 4-pack of window shades has got you covered while blocking both UVA & UVB rays in baby’s main car plus a partner/caregiver’s car too.

A car seat mirror can provide peace of mind when baby is rear-facing, but is actually not necessary! I experienced postpartum anxiety (PPA) as a new mom, so a mirror was a useful tool for me to confirm that baby remained in the proper position, wasn’t choking, etc. However, having a mirror can also cause driving distractions with the constant checking, so it’s best to keep your eyes on the road - or only look into the mirror when your car is stopped - for everyone’s safety!

🤔 Convertible Car Seat *optional
This is another baby product that totally confused me! A convertible car seat is a stationary car seat that stays in your car (no base or stroller transfer) and grows with your child from the newborn stage to age 4, 6, or 10 years old - depending on the model!
Personally, we did not use our convertible car seat until my daughter outgrew her infant car seat carrier’s weight/height recommendations which was after her first birthday. I just really enjoyed the convenience of our infant car seat carrier much more as a new mom - with the easy transfer from the car to stroller - without having to unbuckle and rebuckle her each time!!
Mom Tip💗
You can totally get away without needing a convertible car seat for baby’s first year! Check out the car seat comparison video up above which better explains the differences between an infant car seat carrier vs. a convertible car seat to help see what may work best for your lifestyle.
Baby Gear
This is another area where they get us new parents good🙈
It’s almost scary how much baby gear currently exists out there & continues to be produced and marketed towards expecting parents.
Formula dispensers, play mats, baby loungers, activity tables, sensory toys - OH MY!
Whenever I start to get tricked into thinking (hello, Instagram ads👋) that I need all the newest & shiny gear, I take a step back, take a deep breath, & remind myself that parents have been raising babies since the beginning of time.
If simple worked back then, then it will work now too.
And it’s true! It’s when your baby would rather play with the TV remote or a plastic water bottle than the pricey toys from the box subscription you signed up for🤦♀️
Can new, innovative baby products make a parent’s life easier? Possibly!
But the one thing that babies tend to crave most from birth is you & your love🩷
A small, lightweight baby blanket is great to have & can be used in many ways!
I would lay a blanket down on the floor with a few toys for tummy time. Or we would wrap my daughter’s legs up with her blanket - if she wasn’t wearing pants - in her swing or in the stroller on walks. However, remember that babies should not sleep with a blanket. It’s important that babies sleep alone in their own bassinet/crib on a firm, flat surface without loose blankets, stuffed animals, or crib bumpers.

We used our baby swing every single day until my daughter outgrew it (~9 months)! It’s a great, safe place to put baby to help free up your hands & do chores around the house. We would also put Gianna in her swing while we ate dinner to give us tired parents a break haha. The swing was a life saver for us!

We probably used our baby swing more than our bouncer, but a baby bouncer is more portable & easier to take around the house with you. I would put Gianna in the bouncer while I showered or pumped milk too.

Baby wraps/carriers can be helpful to free up your hands (ex: chores around the house) while also keeping baby close. However, I got away without using one as a first time mom! My daughter didn’t seem to like the wrap/carrier though, so I would mostly place her in the bouncer, swing, or on a blanket on the floor as we went about our day.
As a second time mom, I’m planning to use our wrap/carrier more often - if baby will let me - because I think my hands will be just a little more tied up with taking care of two kids. In general, I do prefer a structured baby carrier over a fabric wrap because the long fabric would honestly frustrate me haha!

🤔 Newborn Lounger *optional
I personally wouldn’t call a newborn lounger a must have! Some parents swear by them while other parents say that the use of a newborn lounger is so short lived that the cost isn’t worth it. Plus, newborn loungers are NOT made for unsupervised sleeping. Unfortunately, many loungers (ex: Boppy, Dock-A-Tot) have been recalled due to misuse by caregivers. I would prefer to use a bassinet from a safety standpoint!
🤔 Swaddle/Muslin/Receiving Blankets *optional
These kind of blankets have many names haha! We started out with these types of blankets to swaddle our daughter, but found the HALO sleep swaddles/sacks with the velcro & zipper to be much easier. Overall, I think that these blankets are more pretty than functional! We mostly ended up using these blankets to drape over our daughter’s stroller on sunny days to help protect her skin or lay them down for tummy time. Also, you would only need like 2-3 max of them and not like the 40+ that I registered for haha.
🤔 Rocking Chair *optional
You can really feed your baby anywhere - a couch, the bed, the floor! However, it’s very helpful to have a rocking chair to help you & baby get comfortable especially for those nighttime wake-ups & feeds.
Mom Tip💗
Having a baby will increase costs, but that doesn’t mean it has to be expensive!
Here are some of my favorite ways to save money💵
1) Buy on sale - always waiting until the item you need goes on sale
2) Buy used* - stores like Once Upon a Child & even FB Marketplace can help you save $100s on gently used baby clothes & gear
3) Ask a friend - baby gear takes up a lot of space, so usually parents are happy to declutter their house by loaning out/giving away baby gear
*the only baby item I would not buy used or borrow is a car seat because you don’t know what previous car trauma that car seat has been in which can compromise a seatbelt’s ability to restrain & keep baby safe. Best to purchase new here!
Baby Entertainment
Newborn babies don’t need much stimulation those first couple of months
outside of their environment & their favorite person - YOU!
However, high contrast images (sight), simple noise making toys (hearing), & dangling toys (reach) can be a fun way to help baby to explore the world around them.
I like to keep toys simple & minimal because the toy clutter can certainly add up
- especially as you venture into the toddler years🙃
A simple rattle like this one is a great infant toy! We would use this rattle during tummy time or diaper changes & I like that it’s small enough to pack in the diaper bag too. Babies learn to grasp objects around 3-6 months, so the rattle shaking will mostly be on you for a while haha. However, I also like how this one doubles as a teether for when baby may start teething around 4-7 months!

A crinkle book is great for entertaining babies due to the crinkly sound, fun textures, and vibrant colors! I like how this one has some high contrast (black/white), lots of vibrant colors like bright red, & teething corners to stimulate babies developing senses too.

A play gym with a toy bar encourages baby to move her muscles by reaching & kicking! I like how our play gym included toys of different textures (soft, tags, silicone teethers) that were removable to take around the house with us. We also had fun using the attached baby mirror during tummy time too!

Seasonal
Lastly, I wanted to include some baby items that are helpful seasonally!
These items are great for keeping baby warm in the winter❄️
& cool/skin-protected in the summertime🌞
DID YOU KNOW? Babies under 6 months old actually shouldn’t wear sunscreen.
The FDA and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) instead recommend to keep newborns & babies under 6 months old out of direct sunlight and to utilize shade & protective clothing (ex: hats, long sleeve shirts) while outdoors.
Winter/Fall
I loved using a car seat cover for Gianna during the colder months! I preferred to use this
for outdoor walks over a a baby snowsuit/bunting which was difficult for me to get on/off.

A simple hat & mitten set is a great way to keep baby warm in the cold & snow!

Spring/Summer
A sun hat is a great way to protect baby’s delicate skin & eyes from the sun!

A long sleeve swim rashguard does a great job at protecting baby’s skin at the beach/pool!
I prefer baby swimsuits to have snaps at the bottom for easy diaper changes too🙌

Baby swim diapers are designed to not inflate when wet (pee will escape, but poo will not!)
