Looking for a cute idea for your child's classroom party? Try making these little sensory potion bottles. Here's your step-by-step guide + tips without having to fly to Hogwarts:

What You Need
*I purchased most of my Halloween craft supplies from Temu, but I've linked similar options from Amazon to make everything easier to find. Just double-check the sizes & quantities before ordering!
Step 1: Mix The Potion
Start by mixing water, food coloring, and glitter in your potion bottle.
Fill your bottle with water leaving about an inch of room at the top to make room for ingredients. Add about 3 drops of food coloring and 1 tsp of glitter per bottle.
Mom Tip💗 I would recommend completing this step at home. That way, kids can have fun picking out their potion color without making a complete mess in the classroom lol.
Step 2: Add Ingredients
This is the fun part! You can get really creative with your potion ingredients here.
I would recommend to have six different types of ingredients to choose from. The trick is to have ingredients that weigh different amounts, so that they float at different rates when you shake the bottle.

Step 3: Decorate The Bottle
To finish the activity, decorate your bottle with Halloween stickers. This really allows kids to further customize their bottles. My daughter thought of this step, so kuddos to Gianna!

My Tips for Making Halloween Potion Bottles
✨ My most important tip is to secure your potion cap with super glue! Once a child has completed their bottle, a grown up should super glue the screw cap shut. It only takes a few minutes to dry and ensures that you're not "that mom" who sent home 30 elementary school kids with a leaky, sticky mess in their backpacks lol🙃
✨ Make sure not to add too much food coloring! You want the water to be tinted rather than saturated with color to see the glitter and ingredients swirl around in the bottle, so just a 2-3 drops of food coloring will do.
✨ Get a mix of lightweight + heavy ingredients! A variety of weight/density will give the best sensory experience when the bottle is swirled. Different materials may float, sink, or move differently in the water. Kids can also have fun guessing if each ingredient will sink or float as they make the craft!
FREE Printable Halloween Potion Labels

I kinda wanted these potion bottles to become more than just another school craft. So I made these labels to make the potion bottles look like Halloween decor that families can use year after year!
I printed these labels on clear Avery label stickers. Feel free to customize them further with the year or your child's teacher's name. You can download them below⬇️
Other Ways to Use Potion Bottles
These sensory potion bottles make for a fun classroom activity!
However, they can be used in other ways too.
Having a Halloween themed birthday party? Pass them out as party favors🎃
A rainy fall day? Set up a potion-making station at home with adult supervision👻
Want more Halloween decor? Display them on a shelf or windowsill🪟
Just remember that these are decorative bottles only - not for drinking - and that small fillers + unsecured caps can become choking hazards for young children.
